The Players Will Make or Break Butler as new DC

Joe Starkey of the Trib brings up an excellent point for those who want to spend the next few months debating on end whether or not the Steelers could or should transition to a 4-3 defense over the 3-4 defense with the changing of defensive coordinators. He says that it’s more on the players to set the tone for Butler’s potential success, not the scheme.

Of the final four teams left in the NFL playoffs two of them play a 3-4 and two play a 4-3, but all of them, along with the rest of the NFL, play a huge amount of sub-packages on the defensive side of the ball. That’s where the playmakers come in. That’s what Butler needs more than a new fancy title for the defense, he needs playmakers.

Le’Veon Better than DeMarco

Dejan Kovacevic makes a pretty good case for why although Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray led the league in rushing yards, attempts, and just about every other rushing stat; Steelers Le’Veon Bell is actually the better running back. The big reason; Bell doesn’t fumble the ball. Murray did 6 times this season including a costly one in last weekend’s playoff loss. Of course now Kovacevic has cursed Bell for next season by calling it out. At least we’ll know who to blame if Bell turns into Fumble McFumbleton in 2015.

Hey old guys! Wanna work out?

This was not necessarily Steelers related news but way too hilarious to pass up. We all know that the NFL holds the Scouting Combine each March to let scouts and coaches across the league get a look at the upcoming NFL Draft class. Apparently, according to Around the NFL’s Conor Orr the NFL is now considering hosting a veteran free agent combine to give the older guys that fall through the cracks a chance to be looked at and poked and prodded by coaches and scouts. Fun times.
