Bell and Brown AFC Co-Offensive Player of the Year

It’s not the official “NFL Awards” that will take place the night before the Super Bowl but NFL 101 has decided that they couldn’t decide between Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell and wide receiver Antonio Brown to be the AFC’s Offensive Player of the Year for the 2014 season. In the 45-year history of the NFL 101 Awards, they’ve never had co-winners before.

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt was selected as the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Year while Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the NFC Offensive Player of the Year. Seattle’s cornerback Richard Sherman was selected as the NFC Defensive Player of the Year.

Pro Bowl Shmo Bowl

Steelers Le’Veon Bell had said that if the Steelers would have advanced to the Divisional round of the playoffs, he would have been healthy enough to play but was apparently not healthy enough to make the trip to Arizona to play in the Pro Bowl. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talks of the revolving door that is the Pro Bowl the week leading up to the game that has Andy Dalton now, a seventh alternate, now selected to play in the Pro Bowl as well. I guess Kordell Stewart is busy this weekend.

The Steelers will still send Antonio Brown, who was named a co-captain of the Pro Bowl as well as Lawrence Timmons, who was voted to his first ever Pro Bowl along with Maurkice Pouncey. Ben Roethlisberger had already dropped out of the game weeks ago.

Bettis fights

Jerome Bettis may be fighting to earn his bust and gold jacket in the Pro Football Hall of Fame but his mother, Gladys, is fighting a tougher battle with her son’s help. As Ron Cook of the PPG explains, Jerome’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer and Bettis will be in Pittsburgh this weekend hosting a charity event to benefit the Magee-Womens Breast Cancer Patient Care Fund in honor of Gladys.

Jerome lost his father, Johnnie, 10 months after hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in his home town of Detroit and announcing his retirement from the Steelers. He’ll head to Arizona next week to see if he’ll finally be voted into the Hall of Fame where he hopes his mother will be there for his induction, whenever he finally gets in.

"“Oh yeah. I’m going to have her for a long time. She’s going to see her great-grandbabies. You had better believe that.” – Jerome Bettis"
