Steelers: Tomlin Visits Michigan State University

facebooktwitterreddit

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin recently visited Michigan State University and the Detroit News declared him “enamored” with the program. Seems reasonable.

Not really. Don’t get me wrong. MSU’s program has a lot going for it.  There are some notable alum among the Steelers players as well.

However, “enamored” really isn’t a word I think anyone in Steeler Nation would use for Mike Tomlin, obviously. We know from his pressers that he has a certain way of speaking and we embrace that, right?

Anyway, Tomlin is quoted in the article as trying to downplay anything the Detroit reporter might be trying to spin up:

"I go where the players are, and obviously, you look at what coach Dantonio has done over there over that time period, it’s obvious that there are players there,” Tomlin said this week at the NFL annual meetings. “I go to LSU every year; I go to Florida State just about every year. I’ve gone probably to eight of the last 10 Ohio State pro days. I’m a pro day guy, so don’t read too much into that.”"

Maybe it’s wrong, but I had to chuckle.  That’s Tomlin being, well, Tomlin.  With an “obvious” and an “obviously” in there, you know that is an accurate quote.

As far as the MSU program goes, I can see why Tomlin makes that one of his stops.  It isn’t the biggest program in Michigan, but it is solid and has a good reputation.  The Steelers are always looking for the hidden gem.

I’d say that Le’Veon Bell has worked out well for the Steelers, wouldn’t you? I know the draft results for Tomlin and Colbert could be better, but this isn’t the only team with that problem.

I think the management does a better job finding young players in free agency than they do in the draft, but that’s just me.

Overall, I would say that while Tomlin is most definitely not “enamored” with MSU, I think it makes sense for him to visit that pro day.  Having said that, I’ll be glad when the draft is done and practice starts.
