Super Bowl in the Burgh?

The topic of possibly bringing the Super Bowl to the city of Pittsburgh has been talked about since Met Life Stadium in New York/New Jersey hosted Super Bowl XLVIII and everyone made it out OK. Steelers President Art Rooney II took the first step in submitting his city into consideration, according to Teresa Varley.

The Steelers presented an application to the NFL in the league meetings in May in San Francisco. On Wednesday, Rooney released a statement announcing his intentions on pursuing the possibility of the city hosting a Super Bowl.

"“We met this morning with local community leaders to provide an update on formally submitting our application to the NFL to bid for Super Bowl LVII in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. The application is an early step in the bidding process, and we will continue to meet with representatives of the Mayor’s Office, County Executive’s Office, VisitPittsburgh, Allegheny Conference as well as other community leaders to review the requirements with the hopes of submitting our bid to host Super Bowl LVII in 2023.” – Art Rooney II"

You know you’re a true yinzer if your initial thoughts went from “Oh wow! That would be cool!” to “Oh good Lord the traffic is going to be terrible!”

Shiny new seats

Gerry Dulac of the PPG has an update for us on the South Plaza end zone expansion at Heinz Field. The expansion is set to add nearly 3,000 more seats to Heinz Field (something that doesn’t necessarily hurt their chances for a Super Bowl bid) that includes general and premium seating.

The Steelers host their first preseason game of the 2015 season on Aug. 23rd and the construction on the South Plaza is expected to be completed by then.

Do defenses still win championships?

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t been known for their intimidating defense for quite some time. Through some “transition seasons” the team has really learned to rely on the strength of the offense, and based on last season, Ben Roethlisberger is more than up to the task of taking the team on his back.

With the defense still in a transition, particularly with a new defensive coaching staff and an influx of youth, can the team make a deep playoff run in spite of not having a great defense? CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson says that the Steelers can go all the way even with an average defense.

Wilson backs his statement up by comparing the ’14 Steelers to the ’14 Packers and explaining that the two teams were basically riding on their hot offense with so-so defensive performances and if not for some terrible luck and even worse play-calling from Packers coach Mike McCarthy, Green Bay would have been the one facing New England for the Lombardi Trophy.

Wilson explains that the same can happen to the Steelers in 2015, if their offense basically puts up the same or better performance. No pressure.
