Growing up a little more each game

Some of the younger Steelers on defense took some positive steps in last week’s preseason win over the Green Bay Packers. The fans and coaching staff will be looking for even more growth out of players like Shamarko Thomas, Bud Dupree, and Jarvis Jones.

Mike Prisuta spoke to Shamarko Thomas about the outlook on the defense through three preseason games.

"“Definitely took some steps. The defense as a whole, I feel like, was communicating more, we were on the same page.” – Shamarko Thomas"

The whole defense working together with the goal of getting after the quarterback resulted in six sacks on Packers quarterbacks by six different Steelers. Jarvis Jones was one of the players who recorded a sack last week.

"“Coach Tomlin and our defensive staff put out a challenge for us and wanted to see a pass rush. We started off kind of slow but James Harrison went in and really amped people up on the sack-safety. Guys just started getting after the ball.” – Jarvis Jones"

Who has the most to gain?

While the depth chart will most likely list Darrius Heyward-Bey in the No. 3 wide receiver position in Martavis Bryant‘s absence in the event of his suspension, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler explains that Markus Wheaton and Sammie Coates have the most to gain from Bryant’s absence.

Wheaton was looked to be the team’s slot receiver this season and Coates was basically drafted to be a Bryant-clone. It kind of makes sense that they drafted him in the third round while other needs were more pressing if they had knowledge of the potential trouble Bryant was facing.
