While the team works the week to get ready for the Lions we’ll be busy looking for mentions of your Black & Gold so we’ve got you covered. Here’s your Steelers Morning Huddle for Thursday, Aug. 11th.

Bonding time

The Steelers are about to kick off their preseason and coach Mike Tomlin kicked the week off with his first presser of the year. In it he covered how we can all expect to not see the likes of Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, DeAngelo Williams, Le’Veon Bell and Maurkice Pouncey to play on Friday night against the Lions.

Tomlin also shared his thoughts on how the unique and timeless the Steelers tradition of holding their training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe each year while more and more teams move to just holding their camps at their own practice facilities.

Tomlin gets you right in the feels with his reasoning behind why he’d like to have the team practice and bunk out of Latrobe all year long.

"“There are some informal moments that make training camp valuable, and that’s why you come to settings such as this. This holds informal moments when you’re sitting outside at 10:30 at night, the day is done, and the guys are sitting on the stoop talking about football, talking about life issues and helping one another. That doesn’t happen as much when you leave the training camp setting because when the day’s work is done, the guys go their separate ways. So there’s some intrinsic value to being here, some things that you can’t measure, and those are things that I think about when I think about training camp. Those are the things that make me really excited about bringing a team to an environment like this.” – Mike Tomlin"

You think they tell ghost stories too? I bet they tell ghost stories.

Not retiring any time soon

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sat down with CBS Local’s Bob Pompeani to go over everything from kids to rivalries and being the leader of the team. Heading into his 13th NFL season he could be thinking about how much longer he has in this league but he tells Bob that he’s not even worried about it.

"“I feel great. I joke, but it’s kind of serious, that it’s either Mr. Rooney or the Good Lord is gonna tell me I’m done. I feel now that I won’t play past when I can’t play. I’m not gonna force the team to make a decision. But, if I feel healthy I’m gonna do it. I hate looking forward to the end because I feel like I’m cheating the here-and-now. In this game, we all know, you’re one play away from being done. I don’t want to cheat the fans, my teammates, from now and here, this next practice, this next game to think about, ‘Oh I’m gonna be done in four or five years.’ I’m gonna let it play out and see what happens.” – Ben Roethlisberger"

Hopefully a few more Super Bowls will be what happens.

He does not slay

His last name might be Slay but he is no Beyoncé. Detroit Lions cornerback Darius Slay got to match up against Steelers receiver Antonio Brown for the first of two joint practices the teams will hold prior to Friday’s preseason game.

You can probably guess how Slay did against Brown. ESPN’s Michael Rothstein explained how Slay got a first-hand education on covering the best wide receiver in the league. He used to have to match up against the much taller Calvin Johnson in Lions practice but Brown posed a whole host of new problems.

Next: Steelers expecting versatility from Sean Davis

At least with Brown on the sidelines for Friday’s preseason game he won’t be burned on a bigger stage.
