First Super Bowl points

Steelers defensive end Dwight White was an integral part of the Steel Curtain defense of the 1970s. Playing alongside Mean Joe Greene, L.C. Greenwood and Ernie Holmes, Dwight “Mad Dog” White and the Steel Curtain would become one of (if not) the greatest defensive lines in NFL history.

It’s only fitting, then that the first points scored by the Steelers in a championship game belonged to the defense, particularly a member of the Steel Curtain. The Steelers came into their first league championship game on the backs of their defense after allowing the fewest total yards and fewest passing yards that regular season.

White was suffering from pneumonia in the days leading up to the game and his availability for the game came into question. But, in spite of losing 20 pounds that week, White not only started the game but also recorded the first points for the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Super Bowl when he sacked Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton in the end zone for a safety.

Those were the only points scored in the first half of Super Bowl IX. The Steelers would go on to defeat the Minnesota Vikings 16-6, earning their first ever Super Bowl victory in franchise history. Making this not only one of the answer to sports trivia questions for ever but also one of the greatest moments in Steelers history.
