Devlin Hodges vs Chargers Defense

The Duck-man rises… Released at the 53 man cut downs, signed to the XFL, and called back following the Josh Dobbs trade, the preseason fan favorite steps into the spotlight in Pittsburgh’s most dire hour yet.

The World Duck Calling Champion will need a championship performance to help bring his team back on track. After Mason Rudolph went down in the game, Hodges stepped in and nearly put the Steelers in position for a game-winning drive if not for a late fumble.

The time table for Rudolph’s return is unclear, but it seems for now that “Duck” will get the nod this week. Remember, the concussion protocol can be very difficult to get out of.

Things won’t be easy for him as not only is his receiver corps banged up (Washington shoulder, Juju toe) the Steelers also lost their dynamic running back Jaylen Samuels for a month due to a knee injury.

The Chargers defense currently ranks at 11 in total defense and 9 in points allowed. Despite this, they stand at 2-3 with 2 game deficit in the AFC West early. Their defense will be licking their chops to take on an undrafted rookie and return to .500.

In his limited action, Hodges looked poised and comfortable throwing the football. However, this also came with a couple of questionable throws, including an interception negated by a Baltimore penalty. It was refreshing to see him willing to sling the ball with confidence, however.

It might be a stretch, but the last time a backup Steelers quarterback played against the Chargers they came away victorious. The pressure is on offensive coordinator, Randy Fichtner, to game plan and on Devlin to execute to put points on the board in LA.
