Offensive line

While this may be a bit obvious, and is not one single player; the offensive line can singlehandedly put the Steelers in the driver’s seat to win this game. With the inexperienced “Duck” Hodges at quarterback, it is as important as ever to have success running the ball and winning on the early downs. If the run game is effective, led by Benny Snell, then the game gets easier for the quarterback.

This group needs to use its veteran leadership, and physically take control of this game; moving double teams, and dominating at the line of scrimmage. It is always important to limit the penalties but it certainly is now more than ever. When the Steelers are consistently behind the chains, the Browns get to “pin their ears back” and rush the passer free of the threat of the run.

In the passing game, the Browns are obviously down their best defensive player, who happens to be their best pass rusher (Myles Garrett). This is a huge loss to this defense, and the Steelers must take advantage of this loss. While Garret didn’t register a sack in the meeting 17 days ago, he did register three quarterback hits and a tackle for a loss. With him out of the line-up, the scheme that is required to possibly chip or help on the edge is no longer present.

Their second-best pass rusher Olivier Vernon is listed as questionable. Should he not be able to go, there is no reason the Steelers are unable to keep Hodges clean throughout the game.

This offensive line is an extremely talented, experienced group, and it is imperative that they take this war in the trenches personally.

If the Steelers plan to make a wild card run, this is a must-win game versus a divisional opponent at home. Expect this game to be physical and chippy from the start. With multiple offensive skill positions out, the defense and the offensive line must take this game over.
