3 options for the Steelers to replace Devin Bush
In-house Options
This is the most likely option at least for the time being as the Steelers normally try to solve their injury problems in-house. Going forward with Vince Williams and Robert Spillane does seem troublesome as both play the same kind of run thumping style with no real quality abilities in coverage. Pittsburgh could go forward with this duo but it could be an issue. The more athletic backup, Ulysees Gilbert III could be a big factor going forward if he can prove some starting ability and take over for Bush.
Another wildcard option could be using all three linebackers at different parts of the game and bring in Marcus Allen on passing downs in a hybrid safety position that would allow a more athletic coverage player to replace a linebacker. This is an intriguing option and one that the Steelers might actually implement. It could make matchup concerns though depending on which players are on the field. Allen got looks and snaps at inside linebacker during training camp so it is a real possibility that he gets an expanded role on the defense after starting to standout on special teams. The coaching staff seems to like Allen and it wouldn’t be all too surprising if they start to expand his role on this team.
There are some interesting options out there that could help ease the loss of Devin Bush. Don’t be surprised if the Steelers just roll with the players they got, even if the better options are out there to get.
