4 Steelers who could be cap casualties after the 2020 season
By Tommy Jaggi
TE Eric Ebron
The Steelers have not one, but two tight ends who could be potential cap casualties this coming offseason. While cutting McDonald clearly makes more sense as his role has been very minimal with the team, there could still be cause to part ways with Eric Ebron next offseason.
This isn’t because Ebron has played badly for the Steelers; quite the opposite actually. Ebron is having a very solid year and has been a reliable target down the middle of the field for Ben Roethlisberger. However, Pittsburgh could save $6 million by getting out of his contract after the season with $2.5 million in dead cap space.
Saving $6 million may not seem like a lot, but in a year where the Steelers will be forced to downsize in order to get back under the cap and sign some cheap players to fill their roster, Ebron is a potential casualty in 2021. He has been a solid signing by Pittsburgh this offseason and they wouldn’t have much else going for them at the tight end position if he wasn’t there. Still, this is the business part of things, and if the Steelers can’t extend him, he may not be able to stick around for another season.
