DB Cameron Sutton

I am amazed at the progress defensive back Cameron Sutton has made in each of his first four NFL seasons. Sutton initially struggled in his first two seasons in the league, but we saw him take a big step last year. Now, he is arguably the most consistent defensive back the Steelers have on their roster.

While he’s not a full-time player, Sutton has played close to 50 percent of defensive snaps this year for Pittsburgh, according to Pro Football Reference, and he has not disappointed. Asked to wear multiple hats as a nickel back and dime backer, there isn’t anything more the Steelers could have expected out of Cameron Sutton this season than what he has brought to the table.

Sutton’s play has been so good, in fact, that he now ranks inside the top 5 of all NFL cornerbacks, according to Pro Football Focus, and his coverage grade is 3rd-best in the NFL. The Steelers will have some important decisions to make at the cornerback position after the season. With Sutton set to hit the market, they could save $7 million by cutting Joe Haden and $8 million by cutting Steven Nelson. To retain a player who has been as good as Sutton, it may be worth it to part ways with one of their veteran corners.
