While picking up an established NFL veteran sometimes seems like the way to go, Pittsburgh could be at the point where they would just like to draft the tight end of the future. Remarkably, the Steelers haven’t spent as much as a 3rd round draft choice on a tight end since taking Matt Spaeth all the way back in 2007. Clearly, it’s time for them to spend some draft capital in this department.

Penn State tight end, Matt Freiermuth, is a player who would make sense. At 6’5” and 258 pounds, Freiermuth fits the bill of an all-around tight end. He’s nothing special from an athletic standpoint, but he has very reliable hands and can absorb a hit and still hand onto the ball. Freiermuth can also serve as an inline blocker – something Pittsburgh’s offense has desperately been missing.

Freiermuth had season-ending surgery this year, but he’s been a touchdown machine for Penn State in his first two seasons and was headed towards another solid year as a junior. He may not be worth spending a first-round draft choice on, but he is a player I can see the Steelers having an interest in this year in the 2021 NFL Draft.
