WR James Washington

Depending on what happens with JuJu Smith-Schuster this offseason, wide receiver James Washington could be in line for an expanded role. Most of us expect JuJu to hit the market, as the Steelers likely aren’t able to find the funds to retain him. If this is the case, Washington could finally break out in year four.

Despite leading the team in receiving yards in 2019, Washington was back to playing a reserve role for the Steelers in 2020. However, he always seems to impress when given the opportunity. James Washington isn’t the biggest or fastest receiver, but he’s solid after the catch and he has impressively strong hands in traffic. It’s possible that he could assume JuJu’s role as the Steelers primary slot receiver in 2021 and work the short and intermediate routes across the middle of the field.

Of course, we don’t know yet what the Steelers will be looking to do in April’s draft. If they lose Smith-Schuster, drafting another wide receiver is something that could be high on their priority list. Still, Washington has done enough to earn the trust of coaches as well as fans. If the scenario plays outright, he could be a player that shines for Pittsburgh in 2021.
