Former first-round status

Whether fans want to admit it or not, the fact that Dwayne Haskins was a high first-round draft choice factors into their assessment of who they believe he could be for the Pittsburgh Steelers. In fact, this may be the driving factor behind believing that he will be the team’s next franchise quarterback.

When players are drafted in the first round, they are going to get more opportunities than players who were drafted on day three – that’s just the way it works. Look at the Steelers current quarterback room. Dwayne Haskins already played in 16 games and threw the ball 590 times in the NFL, according to Pro Football Reference. In comparison, Josh Dobbs – who was drafted in the fourth round – has had just 17 pass attempts in the first four seasons of his NFL career.

Think about it this way: If a quarterback had a 3-10 record while throwing 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions over his first two NFL seasons and being at the bottom of the league in yards per attempt, would you want him if he wasn’t a former first-round pick.

Don’t be naive enough to believe that Haskins’ former draft status doesn’t play a factor. With some of the issues he had prior to his release, he would still be on the market right now if he wasn’t the former 15th overall pick in 2019.
