Steelers cornerback depth

Just because the cornerback depth has yet to be sorted out, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Though most players in the secondary had their ups and downs during the Hall of Fame Game, there were a few bright spots.

I thought second-year cornerback, James Pierre, had one of the best performances of the night. Though he did give up a deep reception on a post route early in the game, this came when he was starting alongside Cameron Sutton at left cornerback – a position he really hasn’t played in training camp. With the exception of this play, Pierre had a great night that included an impressive pass breakup and some sticky coverage overall.

While Pierre may have stretched the gap between his competition, it’s still hard to say how the Steelers are going to use these cornerbacks in certain packages. Antoine Brooks had a decent night and made a few impressive tackles in run support. However, he wasn’t as smooth as Pierre.

In addition, Justin Layne committed a pass interference down the sideline and didn’t do much to impress, while Mark Gilbert shined with the third-team defense. Perhaps there will be a few more shifts on the cornerback depth chart soon.
