Steelers Johnson brings the hammer

One of the most impressive albeit least talked about performances from the Hall of Fame game was how well Buddy Johnson played. The fourth-round rookie flashed some athleticism and strong play-reading skills in his first performance with the team. He only recorded two tackles on the night, but he was all over the defense, making a few coverage plays and blowing up a screen before it could turn into a big play.

While he won’t be starting this week, Johnson should still see a considerable amount of playing time. Considering he was one of the stronger defenders in the first game, don’t be surprised if he flashes again this week. One area where we should all want to hear his name called more is special teams. While ideally, he lands a starting job eventually, he needs to first earn some reps on coverage units.

I think he does all of this and more against the Eagles. Given how the Steelers use their off-ball linebackers, Johnson should be in for a great game. A couple of tackles, a sack, and perhaps even an interception are all squarely on the table. Don’t be surprised to hear his name continue to get recognition as the offseason wraps up. He could easily be one of the Steelers’ top defenders by the time the preseason wraps up.

While the starters will see some more reps in this second preseason game, there will still be a lot for the backups to prove. Keep these four bold predictions in mind as the Steelers face the Eagles in their second preseason game of the offseason.
