Don’t let ‘Big’ Ben Roethlisberger persona die

The Ben Roethlisberger we have seen over the past few years is not the one we have come to know and love. In fact, outside of physical appearance, nothing else even looks like that same player.

In his glory days, Big Ben would keep his eyes downfield, shrug off tacklers, and move outside of the pocket to extend the play. Nowadays, Roethlisberger plays more like a beat-up Alex Smith than himself from his younger years.

While Ben isn’t going to be scrambling around much, he can’t lose the confidence that made him such a good player, to begin with. He needs to scan the field and not just settle for dump-off passes. He needs to move around a bit in the pocket and not just allow the rush to cave in on him.

In his old age, the Steelers quarterback isn’t going to look like he did when he was young. However, I still want him playing with that ‘Big Ben’ confidence this year instead of living in his fears.

I don’t believe that Ben Roethlisberger can somehow return to becoming even an above-average quarterback in the NFL. However, with a few minor changes (mostly mental), he can salvage this embarrassing season and go out on a good note after 2021.
