Steelers Highsmith has a career day

While the talk of the town is T.J. Watt and his defensive player of the year push (and rightfully so), one shouldn’t forget about Alex Highsmith. While the second-year edge defender didn’t record a sack last week, he has continued to play at a high level and force pressures on the quarterback. He has a dream matchup this week as well since the Vikings will likely be without their top offensive tackle in Christian Darrisaw.

Taking Darrisaw’s place at left tackle is Oli Udoh, a player who has been average at best but has mostly played at guard when called upon. An average guard will naturally struggle at tackle, and Udoh has been no exception there. PFF credits him for 14 total penalties so far, and that number will likely go up as Highsmith uses his speed to get after Cousins.

While the Steelers pass rush as a whole will take a step back due to facing a good offensive line, I think Highsmith makes his mark to the turn of 2.5 sacks and leads the way for the team in that category. Udoh isn’t a horrible guard, but he lacks the needed technique to be a proper tackle. He is tasked with going up against a talented speed rusher in Highsmith, and I think he ultimately exploits that this week.
