The Steelers defense played the ‘bend, don’t break’ style to help secure victory against the Ravens

The Steelers defense, once known for being a stingy run defense, gave up two-hundred and forty-nine yards on the ground.  That is terrible.  This is not the receipt for success, but, miraculously, the porous run defense did not come back to haunt us.

Prior to the INT in the end zone perpetrated by Cameron Sutton, I told my twenty-three-year-old son, who is as passionate a Steelers fan as I am, that someone needed a play if we were going to have a chance to win the game and Sutton delivered.

Other players on defense certainly delivered and it was truly a group effort on that side of the ball but the fact that we still have issues stopping the run is extremely concerning to me.  Again, for a team that had been known to be able to stop the run almost at will, the inability to stop the run this year is just perplexing.

I think the difference in the game was the fact that the Steelers won the ‘turnover battle’.  In addition to the INT that came courtesy of Sutton, we were able to generate another INT and recovered a fumble.  When the defense creates turnovers and the offense can capitalize, we generally end up winning the game.

Let’s see what else we learned.
