5 free agents who would love to play for Steelers HC Mike Tomlin
By Tommy Jaggi
EDGE Jadeveon Clowney, Browns
Jadeveon Clowney is a former first-overall pick who has bounced around the league (mostly in the AFC), and you better believe that Mike Tomlin has gotten a great look at him over the years.
In the past, a player like this would have been too far out of reach for a team with limited cap space. However, as the asking price for a player like Clowney has gone down, Pittsburgh’s cap space has gone up. Tomlin no doubt realized how losing Bud Dupree impacted this team’s run defense last season, and they could bring in another athletic, big-bodied edge rusher to help in multiple areas.
While the Steelers do have Alex Highsmith across from T.J. Watt, Tomlin could be willing to move Highsmith back to a rotational role in order to bring in a talent like Clowney. With Watt and Heyward demanding so much attention on their defensive line, Clowney could feast in 2022.
Remarkably, Clowney has never had a 10-sack season in 8 seasons in the NFL, but he likely knows he can change that if he were to join a Mike Tomlin defense that routinely leads the NFL in sacks.
Tomlin is a players’ coach, and there are probably countless other free agents who would love the chance to suit up for him. It will be interesting to see if the Steelers have an interest in adding these five players during the 2022 offseason.
