Steelers Draft scenario 2:

Acquire QB via trade/free agency, double-up on OL rounds 1 and 2

Of course, there’s always the possibility that the Steelers elect to pass on selecting a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft. If that happens, then what? While drafting a QB seems more likely than ever this year, let’s consider a scenario in which Pittsburgh finds a veteran QB through free agency or via trade.

By doing so, the Steelers would fill an immediate need with a veteran who can help keep them competitive, as they will kick the can further down the road when it comes to finding the long-term franchise option at QB. Doing this, however, would give Pittsburgh ample flexibility in the draft.

The last time Kevin Colbert double-up on offensive linemen to begin the draft was exactly 10 years ago when they selected David DeCastro and Mike Adams with their first two picks in the 2012 NFL Draft. While Adams was clearly a bust, the Steelers struck gold on DeCastro.

With how adamant the front office has been about improving the offensive line,  I can see a scenario where the Steelers revisit this strategy and spend their first two picks on the offensive line. Perhaps a combination of OT Trevor Penning and OG Jamaree Salyer, or maybe it’s Zion Johnson and Bernhard Raimann. Either way, this seems like a very possible avenue if the Steelers don’t go QB in the draft.
