Steelers must consider LB Leo Chenal

Watching Leo Chenal on tape, I never would have guessed that he had 4.53 speed. The big Wisconsin linebacker officially measured in at 6’3” and 250 pounds. But despite his big frame for today’s off-ball linebacker, Chenal was cruising with a 4.53 40-yard dash.

Chenal also jumped out of the building with a 40.5 inch vertical and a 10’8” broad jump. While he may not always play up to his testing numbers, it certainly doesn’t hurt Chenal’s draft stock that he tested as one of the best athletes at the linebacker position this year.

Chenal is a downhill thumper who can take on blocks and sift through traffic. But unlike former Steelers linebacker Vince Williams, the Wisconsin product is much bigger and more athletic.

Even with his speed, some teams may not view Chenal as an every-down linebacker at the next level, as coverage isn’t exactly his forte. Still, Chenal would be a perfect fit on Pittsburgh’s defense. I think he’s a solid pick in the second round and a slam dunk in the third if he’s somehow still on the board.
