Steelers could trade for Darnold

I think it’s becoming pretty clear at this point that Sam Darnold is just a bad football player. However, the disappointing start to his NFL career may not be enough to stop the Steelers from considering him as a potential trade option.

Darnold started out hot in Carolina before an abysmal streak to close out the 2021 season. He earned just a 4-7 record last year and didn’t perform particularly well in any individual area. Still, perhaps the Steelers believe he is good enough to lead the team as a stop-gap option until they find a more permanent solution.

Darnold has a cap number of $18 million in 2022 that no team in their right mind is going to want to absorb. However, if the Panthers are willing to eat some of that money, they could ship him away for essentially nothing simply to begin their rebuild process with someone else.

I think this move is very unlikely considering the struggles Darnold has had early in his career, but if the Steelers once liked him enough, perhaps they are willing to give the 24-year-old quarterback one more chance.

In my mind, there isn’t a quarterback worth trading for who hasn’t already been dealt this offseason. I would steer clear of these three signal-callers, but they seem to be the only potential trade options left on the market. The Steelers should look elsewhere.
