Steelers could bring back Fort

L.J. Fort has had quite the career considering his status entering the league. A lowly free agent out of Northern Iowa, Fort was a journeyman before settling in with the Steelers. There, he became a great special teams option and a reliable depth piece to the linebacker’s room. He has since found his way onto the Ravens roster where he has continued to be a fine reserve and a good special teams player.

Assuming he hits free agency once again this season, he would be a name that makes a good deal of sense for the team. While up there in age and with no room to grow as a player, Fort would be a key depth signing that can take snaps on both defense and on coverage units. No, he wouldn’t be penciled in to start, but he can wear a variety of hats to make him a valuable team member.

Considering his limitations, age, and current contract status (he was playing for the minimum last season), Fort should be extremely affordable. Assuming Joe Schobert departs along with potentially Marcus Allen, this room will need some new depth. Fort would provide that while also still serving as a special team’s ace. If he is willing to stay at the minimum next season, Pittsburgh should be all over him.
