Mayfield would make the Steelers training camp a true quarterback competition

With the signing of Trubisky, a prospect of a quarterback competition went out the window. Essentially the job is Trubisky’s unless he loses it to Rudolph or Haskins. Would Baker Mayfield be good enough to win the starting job in such a competition? Who knows, we would have to see how they all perform. However, if Trubisky truly wants the starting role, he would have to bust his rear end much more than if in a straight competition between himself and Rudolph.

If Trubisky performs as expected, it is likely that even with Mayfield on the roster, he wins the starting position. The real question is whether Mayfield would edge Rudolph out for the backup role. Common sense would dictate he would or should hands-down win that role. However, Mayfield is not the best quarterback out there, and Cleveland is letting him go for a reason, fairly or unfairly.

Nonetheless, anyone who is a former starter, especially for four seasons, brings something to the table in a competition. His presence would keep everything square and ensure that whomever the Steelers name as the starter for the Steelers in 2022 has won the position outright and does not assume the starter’s role because he did not play poorly enough to lose the position.
