Why Steelers are drafting a QB, regardless of how you feel about it

Comparing different quarterback draft classes

Take the bloggers out of the equation for a minute. While bloggers might want a quarterback, you must ask what does Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert want? Right now, you must discount the notion of what bloggers want because Mike Tomlin, on March 27th, came right out and said the Steelers are targeting a quarterback. However, he was cryptic about whether they would trade up or stand pat at pick 20.

As much as one may not like any of the quarterbacks in the 2022 draft class, of the six potential quarterbacks, one or two of them might transform into franchise quarterbacks, and the other four might flame out. That is about the average in any one NFL draft looking at the quarterback position to a certain degree.

In hindsight, in the 2021 quarterback draft class, as highly touted as they were, about three of them may be busts either based on being overrated or having a bad team draft them. Based on what fans saw in 2021, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, or Trey Lance could find themselves in that category. On the other hand, Mac Jones and Trevor Lawrence could find themselves in the success category based on performance. We will have to wait and see.

Do not take this wrong; no one here is saying the 2022 draft class will be the next 2004 draft class, perhaps something on par with 2003, 2008, or 2011. So while on paper, based on someone’s ratings, the 2021 quarterbacks look better. Until 2022’s class steps onto the field, we will not know with any certainty.
