Steelers RB Najee Harris

Don’t take offense to this if Najee Harris is your favorite player. Running backs get a lot of love in general, and as a former first-round draft choice part of a championship program at Alabama, Harris entered the league with big expectations.

We can praise his movement skills in shorts at OTAs all we want or talk about his 244-pound frame, but until it translates to better results on the field, we need to call Harris what he is: a quality NFL running back — not a perennial superstar.

In his first season in 2021, Najee was actually below average in nearly every efficiency metric, and his big-play rate was concerningly slow. While some would say his efficiency is tied to the offensive line, that’s kind of my point.

Running backs in general get overrated for how much they touch the ball, but Pittsburgh rushing attack was actually worse in 2021 than it was with James Conner in 2020. Harris is a good football player, but fans must be able to understand the difference between volume and efficiency. Until Harris can have both, let’s temper expectations.
