Steelers IOL Mason Cole

Kendrick Green might have been the single most detrimental player on the Steelers roster in 2021. Though he flashed at times when blocking on the move, he had sloppy technique and was routinely bulldozed by stronger defensive linemen.

Because Green was so bad as a rookie, fans are already expecting newcomer Mason Cole to be a massive upgrade. As a member of the Vikings in 2021, Cole had a big game against the Steelers last year. However, the overall sample of play from him last season was just okay.

Cole earned a respectable grade in his seven starts with Minnesota in 2021, but he was pretty bad in his first three seasons and his pass-block grade of 44.1 ranked 33rd among centers, via PFF.

Cole might be an upgrade over Green, but that’s not saying much. I think fans should still expect center play that is well below league average and they should be hoping for a player who is serviceable enough to be a low-level stop-gap starter.

It’s entirely possible that these three players could have big seasons for the Steelers in 2022, but I think many fans are setting their expectations much too high. As of now, I think these are three of the most overrated players on the team.
