Steelers Hampton

Casey Hampton, on paper, is a hard player to justify a lot of accolades for. His career stats aren’t that notable, as his nine career sacks spanned out over 12 years isn’t impressive. When you see interior linemen like Aaron Donald becoming a superstar due to his ability to get after the quarterback, Hampton looks like an average player due to his stats.

Just watch him play though and you will see why so many Steelers fans long for the days of the “Big Snack” to return. Hampton was tasked with one thing: taking up space. He didn’t need to blow through blockers and get to the quarterback. Heck, he didn’t need to make a gaudy number of tackles. All he had to do was take up blockers so the linebackers could make the big plays.

There may not have been anyone better than Hampton in this role. On any given play, he would take up two or three blockers, freeing up the linebackers to have a free lane into the backfield and make a play. He was the lynchpin to one of the best defenses the league has seen. He sacrificed personal stats in order for his defense around him to make bigger plays. While there were better players on this defense than Hampton, his role, which caused him to sacrifice a lot of personal praise, is well-deserving of the Hall of Honor.
