DRAFTING IT UP

This year’s Draft is steep in Safety talent, and certainly has depth at Corner, too.  While it is definitely true we need to be looking towards our eventual replacement for Polamalu and Clark, I don’t see the Steelers taking the necessary 1st Round pick in doing so.  As Pittsburgh already has named Starters across the board in its Secondary along with some understudy material that we’ve been told will compete, it is most likely the Steelers wait for the latter rounds to pull from these deep pools:

5th ROUND SELECTION –

  • (SS) Earl Wolff – North Carolina State:  I have a feeling Wolff ends up shooting into a 3rd Rounder, but Earl brings a physicality known in Steelers Safeties and would make an exceptional selection in our 5th. Wolff plays with a ferocious tenacity, a player that both develops and fits well in LeBeau’s Defense and Lake’s tutelage.  He’s also ready to contribute right away on Special Teams.

Corner Back – Mel Blount, Southern University

Mel Blount set the standard for my play as a High School Defensive Back; he set a lot of standards in the NFL, too.  As yet another Hall of Famer from the Steelers, Blount is considered one of the finest Corners to ever play the game.  A five (5) time Pro Bowler and the 1975 NFL Defensive MVP, Blount was so good the League had to institute rules to limit his effectiveness, affectionately named the “Mel Blount Rule”. Blount, to put it bluntly, would knock your jock off.

DO ME A SOLID

Do not draft and develop a prime Corner and let him walk, just as he primes; if this is due to Salary Cap issues, then fix the Salary Cap issue. Sign Coach Lake to a contract extension; he’s one of the League’s Best-Kept Secrets.  Add Depth at Corner and at Safety that makes me feel better about our Depth at Corner and Safety.

WHAT’S YOUR POSITION?

A rule of thumb in the NFL is “you can never have enough Defensive Backs”.  As such, the Steelers will look to add some developmental depth in this year’s Draft, eschewing some major potential at the top of the food chain like Texas’ Kenny Vaccarro.  Should the Steelers move earlier in their Draft Selection at these positions I’d like to see Florida’s Matt Elam taken, but much prefer we instead add talented depth beginning in the 5th Round.
