3 things you need to know before the Pittsburgh Steelers preseason opener

There’s a new defensive package

Chances are, the Pittsburgh Steelers don’t break out their new “dollar” package on defense. This contains seven defensive backs, two defensive linemen and two outside linebackers. But in the preseason, without many starters on the field, it’s not likely they use it.

That being said, you need to know it’s available at any time. If, for some reason, they bring it out in the first half when most of the first team is still in the game, you don’t want to be there yelling to your significant other about how the Steelers just brought out the punt return team on 2nd and 10.

This is a package Pittsburgh has been using a lot during training camp. They’re trying to really revamp their defense and stopping the pass is priority one. They’ll bring this out on second and third situations to try and force the opposing team to run.

It’s an exciting new scheme they use. Something that will make it’s way into a game at some point. Maybe even tonight.
