Expect third down defense to determine the outcome

According to ESPN, the Steelers have the 2nd ranked offense. Averaging 633 yards and 29 points per game. They’re tied for 1st, with 80 first downs. But ranked 23rd in third down conversions. Making first downs, a paltry 35% of the time.

On the other hand, the Ravens lead the NFL in total defense. Limiting opponents to 377 yards and 17 points per game. Their defense is ranked 3rd in third down conversions. Allowing first downs only 31% of the time.

The Steelers better convert at least 45% of their third downs to win.

The Ravens offense ranks 13th overall. Averaging 552 yards and 32 points per game. They’re ranked 4th with 74 first downs. But more importantly, they’re ranked 6th in third down conversions. Moving the chains 46% of the time.

Where the Steelers defense is ranked a pathetic 29th overall. Allowing 655 yards and 30 points a game. However, they’re ranked 4th in third down conversions. Stopping opponents almost 69% of the time.

The defenses will determine the winner of this contest. The defense preventing sustained scoring drives will have the advantage. The defense spending most of their time on the bench will prevail.

If the Steelers are to be that team. They must be stout against the run, opportunistic against the pass and confusing to Joe Flacco.
