3 Steelers who stood out in 17-7 win over Kansas City Chiefs
Jaylen Samuels
One of the more intriguing training camp position battles was who was going to be the number two running back behind James Conner. After two preseason games, the answer is very clear: Jaylen Samuels.
And this is why Samuels makes our list this week. He didn’t have the most impressive stat line, but it’s just a combination of everything we’re seeing early on in preseason. Samuels just looks like a confident and seasoned NFL running back compared to Benny Snell Jr., as well as he should be.
Samuels, with a year already under his belt, looks like he knows where to run while Snell is just trying to run downhill every time he’s handed the ball. Running backs in the NFL nowadays have to be able to improvise, even in the slightest, and Samuels knows when to do such things.
It’s also pretty important to mention that Samuels has looked really good running in between the tackles in both preseason games so far.
Samuels was gifted an easy 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter of the contest as the offensive line parted the proverbial Red Sea for him.
I think it was nice to think of Benny Snell Jr. coming in after a highly productive year in college and becoming a number two running back, but Jaylen Samuels has made this a no-contest early on in preseason.
Jaylen Samuels had to fill in for James Conner a bit last season and fared well. This season, it looks like that he might fare a little better. He looks much better and like a more complete running back.
