Linebackers shine for the Steelers

Yet another good aspect of the game was the improved play of the Steelers defense.  Having given up 28 points in the first contest against the Buccaneers, the defense surrendered only 7 points to the Chiefs.

I realize that most of the starters played against the Chiefs for a few series, while virtually no starters played against the ‘Bucs; however, an improvement is an improvement and Steelers fans will take the improvement.

One player, in particular, who shined for the Steelers defense was Bud Dupree. He tallied 2 sacks in limited action.  To me, it was less about the sacks and more about Dupree looking like the linebacker the Steelers hoped he would become after drafting him in the first round of the 2015 draft.

Granted, his two-sack performance came in a preseason game and would mean nothing if he couldn’t replicate the performance in a regular-season game, but to see him have a multi-sack game was gratifying nonetheless.

Another linebacker who played well was Tuzar Skipper. Recording one of the Steelers three sacks, Skipper was all over the field.  He also recovered a fumble.  I think it will be interesting to see how many snaps he gets in the final two preseason games.  For a team that plays a base 3-4 defense, linebacker is a premium position on the Steelers defense.  If we can find a “gem” in Skipper, all the better for the Steelers.

Let’s move on to the bad aspects of the game.
