An undrafted rookie free agent quarterback almost saves the day for the Steelers.

After starting QB Mason Rudolph was knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter, an undrafted free agent QB out of Samford University, Devlin Hodges stepped in and nearly guided the Steelers offense to a game-winning drive in overtime.  According to the official website of the NFL, Hodges was 7 for 9 for 68 yards.

The fact that there were seemingly no restrictions on the play-calling after Rudolph’s unfortunate exit is important.  Why is it important? If the Steelers go into the game against the Chargers with Hodges at the helm, I think we can assume the full playbook will be available to him.  This can only improve our chances of coming out on top and earning a much-needed win.

Back to the topic at hand.  En route to scoring 23 points, the Steelers offense mustered 269 total yards, of which 192 came via the air, and 77 came via the ground. That’s not a bad showing, but it wasn’t enough to secure victory.

Two areas of concern that were evident in the Ravens game and continue to be an issue for the Steelers offense are 3rd down efficiency and time of possession. Let’s delve into the areas mentioned above of concern a little deeper.
