The Steelers did what they typically have done in free agency

As I alluded to in the title of this article, the Steelers were following the same blueprint with respect to free agency as we have done for the past several years.  We re-structured contracts to free up cap space, we re-signed some of our own free agents and we augmented the roster with ‘tier two’ free agents.

While the aforementioned moves may not necessarily be considered bold or exciting, they are typical of how free agency has unfolded for the Steelers. As I have stated several times in several different venues, the Steelers have never been and probably never will be ‘big players’ in free agency.

We will probably never sign the ‘marquee’ free agent on day one of free agency; we will probably never be talked about as the team who made the bold move to land said ‘marquee’ free agent.  This can drive some fans crazy.  I understand that.

There have been times where I wished the Steelers would have taken an aggressive approach to free agency, but then I think about this:  What if that aggressive move backfires?  What if that aggressive move adversely affects our salary cap situation for years down the road?  Right, wrong or indifferent, this is what it is like to be a Steelers fan during free agency.
