The best Steelers veteran seasons of the Colbert era
By Andrew Falce
James Harrison
2010 Notable Stats: 100 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 2 INTs, 6 FF
While this spot was up for debate when I was first constructing the list, James Harrison and his 2010 season was nothing short of elite. Having turned 32 that season, Harrison was expected by most to begin declining due to his age. Yet his hardcore training and unrivaled pass-rushing skills allowed for him to remain productive. He logged 100 total tackles and 10.5 sacks along with two interceptions en route to another pro bowl nod and first-team all-pro selection.
While pass rushers can succeed in their thirties, the fact that Harrison dominated as he did that season at that age is what sets him apart. He was still the primary pass-rushing threat at that age even though father time was trying to catch up to him. While he had a good season the following year, it doesn’t rival just how much of a disturbance he was to opposing offenses in 2010. Also important to note, while not as elite as this season, Harrison was still a valuable contributor until his age 38 season in 2018.
While his best season was 2008, his 2010 season was easily his second-best effort. While his time with the Steelers came to an unfortunate end, fans should be able to recognize his obvious and lasting talent. Harrison wasn’t just a flashy veteran for one season, he remained a contributor beyond this dominant year.
While veterans naturally have a hard time excelling due to declining physical traits, the Steelers have had their fair share of dominant years from old players. It was hard putting a list like this together, as the Steelers have found a way to get the absolute best out of their aging talent. The fact the team has been able to so effectively blend youth and age has resulted in them being one of the best teams of the 2000s.
