Steelers fantasy football projections for offensive players
By Andrew Falce
TE
Eric Ebron: 42 rec, 462 yds (11 YPR), 6 TDs
Fantasy score: 124 (13th ranked TE in 2019)
Vance McDonald: 33 rec, 406 yds (12.3 YPR), 2 TDs
Fantasy score: 85 (29th ranked TE in 2019)
While I am not personally high on Eric Ebron’s fantasy value like some Steelers fans are, most average draft rankings have him around the 20th best option, meaning he should exceed that number. His yards and receptions will likely be low, but where he should feast on is the red zone. Ebron was a TD machine with the Colts, and that was likely the biggest reason the Steelers signed him this offseason.
That said he will likely be a matchup dependent threat and not a constant starter for any team. Meanwhile, Vance McDonald seems destined to hit the scrapheap of fantasy TEs this season. While he is a solid all-around player, he will likely be seeing more of a Jesse James type role with the Steelers this season. That will lead to more inline routes and blocking, not a bad role for the team, but a horrible spot to be as a fantasy weapon.
Truth be told, neither Steelers TE is looking like premiere threats in fantasy. While Ebron will be primed for the occasional big game, he likely won’t be the fiend so many fans are hoping he will be. McDonald may serve the Steelers better than he did last year, but again, he likely won’t have the stats to be a true threat at the TE position in fantasy. TE is still a murky position for the Steelers, and it likely won’t be any clearer after this season.
With your fantasy draft approaching, keep in mind these Steelers projections when setting your draft preferences. Some Steelers seemed primed to beat out their rankings, others seem like busts waiting to happen. No matter what, the Steelers have a handful of quality fantasy options for this upcoming season.
