Move on from Ben Roethlisberger

Let’s be clear: This is not something Steelers fans unanimously agree that they would like to see happen in 2021. Many fans will defend Roethlisberger to the death, while others are quick to try to shoo him out the door. While it’s hard to know exactly what to do with him after the way he has been playing, it would make sense for Pittsburgh to move on from Ben for financial purposes, if nothing else.

However, this isn’t something the organization is even going to give a second thought to. The Steelers know that Big Ben isn’t worth the $41.25 million he is set to receive in 2021 (currently set to have the highest-contract in the league next year), but they also don’t care. Because Roethlisberger has done so much for this franchise, they will be fine biting the bullet to keep him around and make him happy.

Even if he plays very poorly in the playoffs, there may not be anything he can do in the eyes of the Steelers for Kevin Colbert to cut him after the 2020 season, and an extension is something that could even be in the works. Ben is just a shade of his former self, but he’s not going anywhere until he hangs up his cleats on his own terms.

Colbert and Tomlin have some very important decisions to make that will no doubt shape this franchise into what it will become. However, some of the decisions they will make may be different than what we would like to see happen with the Steelers.
