Tight end

No, I did not include a single defensive position on the list of players Steelers could target (at least not yet). Though Pittsburgh could have depth issues at inside linebacker, edge defender, and possibly even cornerback (depending on if Joe Haden or Steven Nelson is cut to save cap space), I still think they are really going to want to address offense somehow in the first round. Tight end is something that will surely be on their radar.

Pittsburgh is set to fork up a combined $16.4 million to Eric Ebron and Vance McDonald next season, according to Over the Cap. Considering neither player is worth half the money they are set to receive, it’s possible that both could be cap casualties next offseason. The Steelers would love to be able to not only replace but upgrade this position early in the NFL draft. Unfortunately, the top-end depth is lacking at the position this year.

Florida tight end Kyle Pitts is a generation prospect, but he will be long gone before Pittsburgh’s pick rolls around. Outside of him, Pat Freiermuth is widely considered the second-best tight end prospect at this point, but he may not be worth spending a first-round draft choice on.

At the end of the day, we can almost expect the Steelers to spend their high draft capital to bolster an offense that has been severely lacking this year. All of these positions seem to be up for grabs. Who knows? Maybe they even look for their next franchise quarterback in 2021.
