Steelers mock draft round 2: Jalen Mayfield

Jalen Mayfield’s draft stock has been a roller coaster over the past few months. After seeming to be a player that was gaining a lot of steam, Mayfield measured in much worse than expected for a potential NFL tackle, and with poor testing numbers at his Michigan Pro Day, many believe he will be forced to kick inside to guard in the NFL.

Because of his very raw tape and sloppy technique, I can see Mayfield having a bit of a slide in the NFL Draft. Though I don’t remember the last time the Steelers have drafted players from the same school in back-to-back rounds, I certainly don’t think this is out of the realm of possibility. By this point in the draft, Pittsburgh has missed out on the top-three running backs and offensive line is one of their biggest needs.

For the Steelers, Mayfield could start his career as a primary backup who could play both guard and tackle in a pinch. Pittsburgh may even be able to test him at center. The former 4-star recruit at offensive tackle for the Wolverines was once projected to go in the first round. The arrow may be currently pointed down for Mayfield after a sloppy Pro Day, but at just 20 years old, there is plenty of reason to believe that he will get things all together and become a quality football player in the NFL – whether that is at right tackle or the interior offensive line.
