Quarterback
I’ve seen enough of both Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins to know that neither is capable of being the quarterback of the future for this team and hope the Steelers recognize that as well. In today’s NFL, you need more than just an adequate pocket passer who can dink and dunk the ball down the field.
Both Rudolph and Haskins have been very poor in terms of yards per attempt and adjusted yards per attempt throughout their professional careers, and there is no reason to assume that that will change much. While both quarterbacks could (and likely will) improve with more experience, they don’t possess tools that should interest the Steelers enough for long-term commitment to either of them.
Rudolph and Haskins are both statues in the pocket with very little maneuverability and almost no threat to escape and take off with the ball. In addition, they have good, but not great NFL arms, and their accuracy has been all over the place in their first few seasons in the league. This could be Ben Roethlisberger’s last season, and it’s possible that the Steelers could use Rudolph as a bridge quarterback in 2022, but neither Rudolph nor Haskins is going to be the guy for Pittsburgh long-term.
Right now, the 2023 quarterback class looks to be better than next year’s class, but the Steelers are going to want to consider making a move to get their guy in the 2022 NFL Draft.
