While Diontae Johnson is versatile enough to operate as a slot receiver, some fans have the misconception that this is his best spot. I don’t believe that to be the case by any stretch of the imagination. Not all, sub-six-foot, 180-some pound receivers are built the same. While many of them thrive from the slot, Johnson is best from the outside for several reasons.

For starters, not every team has a true ‘X’ receiver who can routinely line up as the lone-side receiver in the formation and beat press coverage. Though we can go on and on about his shaky hands and consistency, there’s no question that beating the press is one of Johnson’s best traits.

Additionally, Johnson is quick-twitched and one of the better route-running receivers in the NFL. He has the ability to fluidly snap in and out of his breaks – giving himself plenty of cushion between him and his defender. In 2019, Johnson led all NFL receivers in separation, according to Next Gen Stats.

Diontae Johnson is the best option to man the ‘X’ receiver position for the Steelers – arguably the most important receiver role on the team. Because of this, it’s essential that Pittsburgh keeps him on the outside as often as possible in 2021.
