Steelers could have taken players at more valuable positions

Devin Bush has shown some promise early in his career, and injuries aside, he could still make an incredible comeback. In fact, I would not be shocked if Bush still developed into one of the best inside linebackers in the NFL. However, this doesn’t refute the fact that the Steelers spent elite draft capital on a position that simply isn’t all that important in today’s NFL.

There were a handful of other options Pittsburgh could have explored that could have been better for their team in the long run with some good players at much more valuable positions. If the Steelers were set on moving up to the 10th spot in the draft, they could have taken left tackle Jonah Williams, edge rushers Brian Burns or Rashan Gary,  or defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons.

Even if Pittsburgh had stayed at pick 20, they could have landed a top-flight pass rusher like Montez Sweat, an elite tight end prospect in Noah Fant or an up-and-coming offensive tackle in Andre Dillard or Tytus Howard.

As it happens too often in the NFL, the Steelers were probably too short-sighted in narrowing their focus in on filling a hole at linebacker. With average career lengths shorter than each of the aforementioned positions, this is another reason Pittsburgh is currently losing out on the trade-up for linebacker Devin Bush.
