Steelers WR Ray-Ray McCloud
If you missed this preseason finale and only looked at the box score following the game, you might be deceived into thinking that Ray-Ray McCloud was one of the standout performers in an overall poor contest for the Steelers. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Though McCloud finally started to turn on the jets in the final drive of the contest for Pittsburgh, he was pathetic prior to that point. In the first half, McCloud dropped two passes that should have been caught and failed to get his feet in bounds on one of Haskins’ only nice throws of the night.
When the game was finished, McCloud had just 61 yards on 9 targets, but this number would have been significantly worse as much of this came in garbage time when the Panthers held a 34-3 lead. His only real threat for his job, Matthew Sexton, also had a bad performance that included a lost muffed fumble early in the game.
McCloud isn’t going to break the stereotype that he’s only a ‘gadget’ if he keeps playing like this. After his game against the Panthers, he doesn’t look like a receiver you would want to count on in a pinch in the regular season.
