Ben Roethlisberger Week 1 Grade: C

This was a tale of two halves performance for Ben Roethlisberger, and since I think he deserved a D-grade for the first half and a B-grade for the second, a C-grade overall feels right.

He played well enough to win with the dominant showing from the defense but didn’t do anything to make me confident that last year’s struggles are in the past. Things should improve around him as the season progresses, but in the interim, Roethlisberger needs to be more consistent. He missed several throws that you expect a starting QB to make, and he had a few passes nearly end up in the arms of Bills defenders.

Overall, this was a game that fans should be happy with the defense more than anything else. There’s nothing wrong with that necessarily, especially when you come away with an upset victory.

But for Pittsburgh to continue to compete with the other AFC powerhouses, the offense is going to need to put up more than 16 points. The change in offensive scheme really started to make an impact down the stretch, giving fans hope that better days on offense await. The talent is there, now it just needs to shine through.

Here’s hoping Big Ben can be the guiding light.
