Steelers loser: The secondary

Talk about a group that was exposed this week. Just last week this group was placed under the winner’s mantra, not due to their stellar play, but instead the versatility that this group showed with the multiple players that say defensive roles against the Bills.

As well though, the Steelers pass rush was highlighted as a key for their success, and that was proven true this week as the Raiders carved the team’s secondary in the second half.

While the pass rush was still present after Watt’s injury, it certainly wasn’t as potent as before. The little bit of extra time allowed Derek Carr enough time to not be rushed into throws. He was methodical after that and threw for nearly 400 yards by the end of the game.

No one in the secondary looked horrible besides Ahkello Witherspoon, who allowed a huge touchdown to Henry Ruggs, but no one looked good either.

Even the players that looked serviceable, such as Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cameron Sutton, still failed to do much and gave up some plays in the passing game. Meanwhile, young players like Tre Norwood and James Pierre looked far more exposed than they did last week.

While those young options should still develop, it appears as though the Steelers’ secondary succeeding is dependent on the front seven getting pressure. If they can’t, this group isn’t ready to lockdown an offense yet.

While there were some bright spots in the Steelers’ loss, overall, this group struggled to do much against the Raiders. The lackluster offense couldn’t make up for the defensive injuries, and this team looked exposed by the week’s end. The Steelers will have to hope for a better bill of health next week if they want to get back on the right track.
