Steelers defense had excuses, but this was a rough performance

The Defense has an excuse because ILB, Devin Bush, and CB, Joe Haden, were injured before the game and didn’t play. In really bad news NT, Tyson Alualu had a season-ending fractured ankle during the game. All-Pro OLB, T.J. Watt, went out, early, with a groin pull. It’s difficult to win with four starters sidelined.

What’s not excusable is DB, Tre Norwood, and CB, James Pierre’s lack of speed and it’s becoming an obvious liability. Pierre had his gluteus maximus handed to him by WR, Bryan Edwards on a TD that was called back. It happened again against WR, Henry Ruggs, on a 1st Down throw. Norwood is almost always at least three steps behind the guy he’s supposed to be covering. Opposing offensive coordinators are beginning to exploit this weakness, more and more. Newcomer, CB, Ahkello Witherspoon had an ignominious Heinz Field debut getting totally burned by Ruggs for a 61 yard TD.

OLB, Melvin Ingram and ILB, Joe Schobert are great additions. Ingram had 4 tackles, 1 for a loss, 1 sack, and 3 QB hits. Schobert recorded 10 tackles and had 2 pass deflections.

Schobert did get beat by TE, Foster Moreau for a TD but the Steelers were showing blitz and everyone was up on line. Robert Spillane was in front of Moreau and was supposed to get a chip but failed to do so. Moreau broke free and the result was six for the Raiders. Other than that Schobert looked good in coverage and has taken over ‘green dot‘ duties, as well. Robert Spillane also did an excellent job,  having a team-high 12 tackles with one for a loss.

Wouldn’t You Like to Know?

Why haven’t the Steelers brought up Safety, Karl Joseph, from the practice squad? If they don’t want to send Tre Norwood down how about Arthur Maulet? Why is he even still on the roster?

Boswell Sets Heinz Field Record.

Kudos to K, Chris Boswell for a 56-yard field goal, setting a new record for Heinz Field. Next up, the Steelers will be facing AFC North rival Cincinnati Bengals. Hopefully, things will go better. Go Stillers!
