Steelers RB Benny Snell

What little opportunity Benny Snell is receiving right now as the number two running back behind the clear workhorse in Najee Harris could go away if he doesn’t start making the most of his opportunities.

Snell earned just 3 offensive snaps last week against the Raiders, but the results were less than desirable. On 2 carries, the former fourth-round pick rushed for just 1 yard. This is a remarkably small sample size and the offensive line clearly has a lot to do with this.

But regardless of the circumstances, it won’t take much for the Steelers to go with a different running back behind Harris if Snell isn’t getting the job done when giving the first-round pick a breather. Antony McFarland could return to the field as soon as next week while Kalen Ballage will be chomping at the bit for an opportunity to move up the ladder (something he probably thought he earned in training camp).

Being underwhelming has been the story of Benny Snell’s career, but he can’t afford to be so mediocre the next time he steps on the field for a few snaps. His job as the RB2 depends on it.

The Steelers have plenty of other starters who have underwhelmed to begin the 2021 season, but these three are in the most jeopardy of being leapfrogged on the depth chart. Let’s hope they get their act together soon. We need all hands on deck.
